The ICRT-Japan program curriculum delivers introductory training in clinical research.  The program consists of online lectures, live interactive webinar sessions, and two four-day workshops in Okinawa, Japan. Content includes Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Programming in Stata, Study Design, Ethical Issues, Scientific Communication, Clinical Trials and Research Leadership concepts.

Workshops focus on the development of high yield clinical research skills via hands-on experience. The program helps learners to accelerate building a substantial skill set through intensive team-based and individual workshop exercises. Essential elements of the workshops include exercises in research question development and study design, practical programming training in statistical software using real-life data sets, and critical methodological assessment of the clinical research literature. In addition, the program includes training in mentorship, academic career development, and research program leadership. The workshops take place in a learning environment which encourages collaboration and collegial networking with faculty and other learners. 

The curriculum begins and ends with two-intensive, four-day, in-person workshops.

Attendance at the workshops is mandatory.

Team Work

Teams work together on assignments throughout the duration of the program.  These assignments are designed to promote collaboration and interaction during and between workshops. At the start of the program, students are randomly allocated to teams. All members of the team are required to contribute to team assignments and present their work to faculty.


Students are required to complete all assignments and quizzes which receive a "pass" or "fail" grade.
